Fewer Barriers for Skilled Workers & International Students as Immigration New Zealand announces new Skill Migrant Policy
new announcement
If you’ve been thinking about moving to New Zealand, now might be a good opportunity. On September 26 2025, Immigration New Zealand announced major updates to its Skilled Migrant Category (SMC).
What’s New to the Policy
Less Work Experience Needed
Previously, you needed at least 3 years of work experience to qualify. But with the new changes, it only requires 2 years for most pathways.
New Points System
INZ has updated the six-point system making it easier to understand what qualifications and experience you need:
Two New Pathways
1. Trades & Technician Pathway
Here’s what you will need:
A role on the official trades/technician list (ANZSCO skill level 1–3)
NZ Level 4+ qualification (120+ credits)
4 years of experience, including 18 months in NZ
Salary meeting at least the median wage
2. Skilled Work Experience Pathway
Here’s what you will need:
A role on ANZSCO skill levels 1–3
At least 5 years of relevant experience, with 2 years in NZ
Salary at 1.1x the median wage
Occupation Restrictions
INZ has introduced two restriction lists: the Red List and Amber List, which limit access to the new pathways for certain roles in NZ.
Red List
If your job is on the red list, you cannot apply through the two new pathways.
But there is still a chance through the traditional SMC if you have:
A Bachelor’s degree or higher, or
A wage of at least 1.5x the median
Amber List
Jobs on this list can’t use the Trades and Technician pathway and will face extra conditions under the Skilled Work Experience route.
