New Parent Boost Visitor Visa to offer longer stay for parents

Parent Boost Visitor Visa has been announced by the Government. This allows for parents of New Zealand Citizens and Residents to remain in New Zealand for as long as 5 years. These application intakes begin on the 29th of September 2025.

To meet the criteria, the applicant must meet these requirements:

-          Have an eligible sponsor such as their children or adopted children, and they or their sponsor must have enough income or funds to support them/selves;

-          They must meet residence-level health standards and maintain full health insurance for the entire length of their stay;

-          Applicants must also show genuine intent to stay in New Zealand for the duration of their visa.

The current financial requirements are as follows and will have to meet one of the following:

-          If the sponsor is the child and is sponsoring one parent, their income will need to meet our current median wage of $33.56.

-          If parents are sponsoring themselves, they will either need to have a joint savings of $250,000.00 or if one parent sponsoring themselves they will need to have at least $160,000.00.

-          If parents do not have sufficient savings but have either a joint income of $49,552.88 or one parent sponsoring themselves have a income of $32,611.28

Once the visa has been granted, visa holders are required to undergo a health and insurance check 3 years after their visa is issued.

There is the ability for people to apply twice for the visa which allows them to stay in New Zealand for as long as 10 years with their families, as long as they meet the requirements.

This visa option is not a pathway to residency however, it provides family who require their parents to be here on a long term basis to provide support for their family.
