Guide to New Zealand's Parent Booster Visa Opening on the 29th of September 2025

The Parent Booster Visa allows parents of New Zealand citizens or permanent residents to remain in New Zealand for an extended period.

To apply for the Parent Booster Visa, there are requirements applicants must meet:

Sponsor Requirements

  • New Zealand Citizen or Resident Child: The applicant must be the parent of a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident. The child (and/or their partner) must be willing to sponsor the parent’s application.

  • Financial Responsibility: The sponsor must meet certain income thresholds, which ensure they can financially support the parent(s). The thresholds a single sponsor must earn is at least the median wage ($33.56) to support 1 parent. Joint sponsors must earn an combined income no least than 1.5x the median wage to support 1 parent which is $104,707.20 NZD. For an additional parent, the income threshold increases 0.5x the median wage.

  • If the applicant’s adult child does not have the ability to sponsor their parent(s), the parent(s) can sponsor themselves. Requirements for the parent(s) to sponsor themselves are as following:

-            Parent having an annual income of $32,611.28 or a joint income of $49,552.88

-            Parent having savings no less than $160,000.00 or joint savings no less than $250,000.00

Health and Character

  • Applicants must meet New Zealand’s health requirements, full medicals and x-rays will need to be completed and Immigration recognised Panel Doctors. This is to ensure that the applicant does not have any serious medical conditions that would place excessive demand on New Zealand’s health system.

  • Applicants must also meet character standards.

 Process

·       Applications open on 29 September 2025.

·       When applying applicants must be offshore.

·       Filing Fee is $3,000.00

·       Expected processing time is 4 months

·       Once INZ approves the application, the application will be approved in principle subject to the applicant providing health/travel insurance within 3 months of approval.
